maintain the rage

Summer Hill Residents - keep an eye out for a flyer in your letter box over coming days.

On the day the tower was installed, a Telstra representative was heard to say "give them a couple of weeks and they'll get use to it". Well Telstra we're not used to it and we want it gone.

I think Telstra is hoping that our enthusiasm is exhausted and that we've lost motivation. We need to show them that that's not the case and that we intend to keep fighting. Please sign the petition at http://www.gopetition.com.au/online/34579.html and write to the people listed here: http://nopowertothetower-summerhill.blogspot.com/

Even if you don't live in Summer Hill please consider signing the petition - it might be in our backyard now but towers like these will be coming to a street near you if we don't let the Telcos and the Government know that we're serious.

Maintain the rage!

DECOMMISSION THE 3G TELSTRA PHONE TOWER AT 28 MORRIS STREET SUMMER HILL

NO POWER TO THE TOWER - SUMMER HILL

Would You Like a Phone Tower in Your Residential Street?

HELP US HAVE THE 3G TELSTRA PHONE TOWER AT 28 MORRIS STREET SUMMER HILL 2130 (inner west Sydney) DECOMMISSIONED AND REMOVED!

In February 2010 Telstra erected a 3G Phone Tower at 28 Morris Street Summer Hill, NSW, 2130 - despite strong opposition from the local community. We submitted about 250 formal submissions opposing the installation of the tower and a petition with close to 1,000 signatures on it. SIGN THE PETITION

The site is zoned 2A residential and in their initial mailout to residents Telstra indicated that the property was a commercial property "with no immediately adjacent" residential properties. THIS WAS WRONG. It seems that Telstra corrected this only to those of us who wrote to them rather than correct their error for all recipients of their initial mailout. When they did correct it, Telstra said the site was primarily commercial as it is a laundromat...Telstra have it wrong again. A family of 6 have lived there for over 12 years - first and foremost this is their home!

The family have accepted a deal from Telstra to have this tower installed on their building despite the outcry from their neighbours.

Summer Hill is a suburb with heritage significance (much of the suburb has been deemed as a heritage conservation area) and the tower has been placed extremely close to a number of sensitive facilities: 2 schools, 2 childcare facilities and a nursing home.

We believe Telstra's 'consultation' was woeful, and that their initial correspondence regarding their plans was inadvertently misleading at best.

We remain ardent in our opposition to this tower and are now seeking it's immediate decommissioning and removal. We are also seeking changes to the 1997 Telecommunications Act, as we believe it unfairly tips the balance of power in favour of the telecommunications companies. Where are our rights as individuals? As rate payers? As voters? As tax payers? Even the minister, Senator Conroy, states that he has no power to intervene in such matters! The Telco giants are a law unto themselves.

Don't let this continue - you suburb...your street could be next as Telstra have essentially indicated that nowhere is safe! Your local council and state government have no jurisdication over these matters. A Development Application isn't even required (unless the building is heritage listed)!

If you live in Summer Hill - would you please advise if you received the initial letter from Telstra (via Urbis their PR company)? Please email us at: nopowertothetower@hotmail.com

We ask you to help by writing to the following to voice your opposition to the installation of towers in residential streets and on residential properties, and request the immediate removal and decommissioning of the tower at 28 Morris Street, Summer Hill 2130:
